The Million Dollar Highway is so named because of the gold ore that exists in the foundation of the road. The scenic highway stretches from the popular town of Durango to Silverton, and is a part of the San Juan Skyway. The scenic expanse of road was originally built in 1883 as a way to connect Ouray and Ironton to the lucrative mining camps around the Red Mountains.
